There are three different roles in the platform:

1.      As a guest you may read, download or print any of the published reviews or the entries in the forum. You do not need to register with PRAGMATICS.REVIEWS to do any of this.

2.      As a registered user you may do any of the above plus comment on and rate reviews, write in the forum and connect with linguists dedicated to the field of Pragmatics. Become a user by registering with PRAGMATICS.REVIEWS. It is free of charge, will only take a minute and provide you with the possibility to connect and share with researchers as dedicated to Pragmatics as you are.

3.      As a reviewer you may do any of the above and you may also order a review copy to be sent to you for review. Become a reviewer by registering with PRAGMATICS.REVIEWS and provide us with keywords about your research interests, academic background and a postal address. Your request will then be checked by our editors and approved after having evaluated your academic background as suited to writing a review in the field of pragmatics.

Look and feel – finding your way across the platform

PRAGMATICS.REVIEWS strives to make your reviewing, reading and networking experience as easy as possible. The following is a summary of the individual pages.

As you land on the website www.pragmatics-reviews.org you will see a brief welcome note and the current volume of PRAGMATICS.REVIEWS. Reviews takes you to a list of all reviews and volumes published so far. Reviews are accessible in pdf and html format. The html version may be rated, commented on and shared on social media websites.

Publications takes you to a list of publications that are available for review. You may also search them by author(s), editor(s), title, publisher, year of publication or ISBN. You will also see which ones are still open for review and which ones already have one or two reviews written on them. Using the "Actions" button on the right, you can choose to become a reviewer (if you are not already), request a book or add a review for a book. Please note that you have to already be a reviewer in order to accomplish the last two.

In the Forum you will have the opportunity to share experiences and to discuss reviews or matters of interest for the discipline of pragmatics with other users. Simply start a new thread if you feel the need of addressing something that has not been discussed already.

Once you are registered, you will find your personal dashboard ("Go To") in the top right hand corner. You can choose between Pragmatics Reviews, which will take you to the pages just introduced. Under My Public Pages your public profile is displayed alongside a list of all other platform users sorted by their respective roles.

For users, My Private Pages allows you to send and receive messages (My Messages) and manage your personal profile under the My Account header. This is where you enter information on your academic experience, research interests (please write a short sentence introducing your research interests in the way you want them to appear under your review) and postal address that we need in order to promote you to the level of reviewer. Once you have applied to become a reviewer, you will find the status of your request under My Submissions.

For Reviewers, her or his private pages are a little more elaborated. In addition to the pages just introduced, reviewers also have a tab entitled My Documents containing their documents such as submitted reviews. My SubmissionsMy reviews and My Tasks allow you to organize your platform activities.

Reviewing a book

Browse through the books already listed under publications – you may also search them by author(s), editor(s), title, publisher, year of publication or ISBN. By clicking on "Request Publication" you notify the publisher of your wish to write a review. Please note that you can only order a book after you have added a valid postal address to your personal profile where the book may be sent to! Also, after two review copies of the same book have been sent out, the "review this book" button will be disabled for this particular book. Please check directly with the respective publishing company or the editors (pragmatics@europa-uni.de) if you have any questions concerning this.

You will then be sent a review copy. Please confirm its receipt in the "pending" section of "My Tasks" and write your review of no more than 2000 words excluding references within two months of receiving the book and make sure to follow our stylesheet.

Alternatively, you may choose a book yourself and suggest it to us at pragmatics@europa-uni.de – we're always interested in getting to know about more exciting books and (perhaps smaller) publishers. We very much welcome reviews on books written in languages other than English, as we wish to make such books as accessible as possible to an ever wider audience. However, your review must be written in English to ensure this wider audience.

We also encourage junior researchers (PhD-students) to submit reviews and ask them to include a note of approval by their supervisor when submitting their review.

If you are not a native speaker of English, please ask a native speaker for language revision.

Please note that you can only ever review one book at a time.

Submitting your review

Once you are happy to submit your review, please go back to the book in "Publications" and under "Actions" select "Add Review". You will then be prompted to upload your review. It will appear in your personal pages under "My Reviews" where you can either work on it by choosing "edit" in the "Actions" menu on the right or "submit" it straight away.

Junior researchers please remember to include a note of approval by their supervisor.

Your review will then be examined by our board of editors who may approve your review, suggest changes to it or refuse it. If they suggest you change something, you will have time to update your review and then re-submit it. It will then be examined again and seen as either fit for publication or still needing changes, in which case you will again have the chance to make the necessary changes and re-submit your review.

Publication of reviews happens quarterly, on the 3rd of March, June, September and December, respectively. We will endeavor to publish reviews as soon as possible but, having the readers in mind, the journal aims to balance the publications across subdisciplines, areas and subjects. Your review will published in two ways: once as a part of the current volume, with an ISSN number, DOI indexed, to be downloaded in pdf format. Your review will also be published on an active html page, also DOI indexed and with the possibility of rating and commenting on your review. We publish under the Creative Commons License CC-BY-NC-SA (3.0), check out their website and our terms of use for more information.

It is also possible to share reviews on social media websites like facebook, google+ or twitter.

Reviewers

When submitting the request to become a reviewer, you thereby declare that the information entered is correct and that information concerning your academic experience, research interests as well as current and previous positions may be viewed by any guest, user, reviewer or editor. In this way it works pretty much like a personal website for example. We will not pass your data on to third parties.

When requesting a book to be sent to you for review, you thereby agree to actually write a review within two months of receiving the book. You thereby also agree that your postal and email addresses are passed on to the respective publishing company in order to send the book out to you. This is the only occasion that some of your private information (i.e. postal and email addresses) is passed on by us to a specific third party.

When submitting a review, you thereby declare that it is original and as yet unpublished material and that you (and potential co-authors) are the sole author(s). You also agree to publish your review under the creative commons license explained above.

Publishers and publishing staff

When uploading information and pictures (i.e. book covers or your logo) on your recent publications on PRAGMATICS.REVIEWS you agree that this information may be viewed publicly and that reviewers may contact you via the platform to request review copies of books. You agree to treat their personal information (email and postal addresses) confidentially, not to pass it on to third parties and to only mail information on other new publications to them if they have agreed to this.

All rights to pictures like book covers or your logos remain with you and/or the respective originators.

Please note that you cannot delete a publication that already has one or more reviews attached to it. Also, in the highly unlikely case of you adding publications that do not fall within the range of Pragmatics, PRAGMATICS.REVIEWS reserves the right to delete such publications from the platform.
